Museum & Grounds
Step into a place where the Old West still lingers in the air. The heart of Silver Reef is the original Wells Fargo & Company Express Office and the Wooley, Lund & Judd Mercantile – beautifully preserved landmarks that once anchored a bustling mining town. Inside, you’ll find artifacts, photographs, and stories that reveal what life was really like here in the 1870s and 1880s.
Wander the grounds and you’ll encounter the stone remains of homes, businesses, and gathering places that stood during Silver Reef’s boom years. A short walk beyond the townsite brings you to the quiet remnants of the very mines that sparked it all.
- Begin your exploration in our Explore section.
Silver in Sandstone?
Silver Reef holds one of the rarest geological stories on Earth. Here, precious metals were discovered not in quartz or granite – but in sandstone, similar to the glowing cliffs of nearby Zion National Park. Nowhere else in the world did miners pull silver and gold from rock like this.
On this site, you’ll uncover how that discovery was made, how miners extracted silver from the surrounding sandstone, and why this place became a geological curiosity that still fascinates scientists today. You’ll also meet the old‑timers who lived the story firsthand and see the artifacts they left behind – now preserved in the museum.
